Book Awards


National Book Award (American Fiction and Nonfiction)
Started in 1950, the awards are presented annually to American authors for literature published in the prior year. The purpose of the awards is "to raise the cultural appreciation of great writing in America." Awards are given in each of four categories: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people's literature.The runners-up and winner are announced during the The National Book Awards Ceremony held each year in November.
 
RITA Awards (Romance)
Since the early 1980's, the Romance Writers of America have recognized the best in the genre through the RITA Awards.
 
Spur Award (Westerns)
Given annually for distinguished writing about the American West, established in 1953 by the Western Writers of America.
 
Edgar Award (Mystery)

Since 1946 the Mystery Writers of America have presented the Edgar Awards, named for Edgar Allen Poe, the father of mystery. Listed below are Edgar awards in our collection by year in the best novel category.

 
Hugo Award (Science Fiction)
Since 1953 the World Science Fiction Society has presented the Hugo awards. The awards are named for Hugo Gernsack, a writer, editor, and publisher, who is considered one of the founders of the genre. In general, Hugo Awards are given for works that appeared in the previous calendar year.
